How Mauritians invest in crypto

Crypto is accessible to us Mauritians, but how easily we can actually use it depends a lot on where we’re living.

If you live in Mauritius

Crypto is legal in Mauritius. There’s currently no law banning us from owning, buying, or selling crypto assets. Many people access crypto through international platforms that accept Mauritian residents.

That said, a few realities matter:

  • crypto isn’t treated like traditional investments

  • local banks don’t all interact with crypto platforms the same way

  • regulations exist (but they’re lighter and still fairly new)

In practice, crypto access exists, but it often feels less structured than traditional investments. You’ll often be dealing with global platforms rather than local banks or institutions.

If you live abroad

If you’re a Mauritian living overseas, crypto access depends far more on your country of residence than your nationality.

Some countries are:

  • openly crypto-friendly

  • neutral but regulated

  • restrictive or hostile

This can affect:

  • which platforms you’re allowed to use

  • whether banks allow crypto-related transactions

  • how gains are taxed or reported

In some places, crypto feels almost mainstream. In others, it’s tightly monitored or discouraged. So even if crypto is legal for Mauritians, local laws where you live still apply.

What often surprises people

Many beginners assume crypto is:

  • borderless and permission-free

  • the same everywhere

  • entirely free from rules

In reality:

  • platforms still follow country-specific regulations

  • banks can block or delay crypto-related transfers

  • laws can change quickly, especially abroad

Crypto reduces middlemen, but it doesn’t remove consequences.

A quiet but important warning

Not all countries are pro-crypto. Living abroad doesn’t automatically mean more freedom. In some cases, it actually means less.

Before doing anything, it matters to understand:

  • how crypto is viewed where you live

  • what reporting or tax obligations exist

  • whether access could change overnight

It’s not about fear-mongering… it’s just about basic awareness.

Pou résumé

Mauritians can invest in crypto (both from Mauritius and abroad). What changes isn’t your passport… it’s the legal and banking environment around you.
